Abstract
Purpose: This study focuses on the artistic and social roles of dance performances in the context of ecological and civilizational transitions triggered by the Anthropocene discourse. In particular, it examines how the interrelationship between humans and the environment is reflected in the sensory characteristics of dance art through the body, and how this relates to the sense of crisis in the Anthropocene era, with a focus on examples of dance performances, and aims to derive their characteristics. Methods: This study is a qualitative study that examines the role and characteristics of dance performances in the Anthropocene discourse through trends and examples of Anthropocene performing arts. Result: First, the performance method of expanding the stage space and reconstructing the relationship between the natural environment and humans stood out, providing the audience with a new sensory experience. Second, it focused on conveying social messages about climate change and environmental protection. Third, attempts were made to explore the dual role of technology and materials, which served to raise public awareness of the climate crisis. Fourth, a performance style was utilized that awakened the audience’s awareness of climate change through a format that allowed them to experience environmental crises in a virtual world, thereby encouraging them to take an active stance as agents of change. Conclusion: Therefore, dance art can serve as a channel for artistically embodying ecological sensitivity and social responsibility within the discourse of the Anthropocene, and there is an urgent need for further academic research to expand the intersection between Korean dance and ecological discourse.
