Abstract

This study examines the creation/performance of a series of madang play works in the context of the formation of the ‘pollution movement’ in the anti-establishment movement in the 1980s as a Korean coordinate for the opposition to the ‘climate’ issue under the current capitalized social system. I tried to shed light on its ecological meaning. Therefore, this study tried to examine the cross aspects of the Madanggeuk movement and ecology, how the anti-developmentalism narrative was diversified, focusing on the problem of pollution, by expanding the gaze from the repercussions of the contemporary theater world and Yeonwoo Stage related to performance methods and artistic freedom. Therefore, in this study, first, in the performance of Madanggeuk, <Cheongsanri Byeokpyesuya> (1981/1983), <Heoyeon Frog> (1983), and <Paddle the Broken Oar> (1983), the context in which ecological problems became visible was analyzed in Seogyo-dong in the early 1980s. ·Interactive activities of ‘Pollution Institute’ centered on Aeogae cultural space and groups of theater, mask dance, and song movements were examined. Since then, centering on <My Hometown> (1984), which was produced as a comprehensive version of the previous acts, after the liberalization of academies at the end of 1983, the public activities of the democratization movement began in earnest, Analyze the aspects in which the problem was addressed and refracted. Lastly, by overlapping these texts in an ecological way, I tried to re-read the areas that are not limited to the organizational movement of dissidents or the dimension of the audience’s collective resistance. Through this, I tried to clarify the criticism of the global political and economic structure and the concrete reflection on the violence of modern developmentalism invading into the dimension of life and existence. Through this study, we will try to historicize the texts created from the viewpoint of the anti-pollution movement at the time, and discover points that can be connected with the current ecological turn.
