Abstract

The broad methodological efficacy of semiotics as an interdisciplinary research methodology has been demonstrated and applied in several fields. This study examine the naming of colonial spaces using semiotic methods. As a testing ground for the Japanese colonial model, the capital of the pseudo-Manchu state, “Shinkyo,” stands as one of the most representative examples. “Shinkyo” is not only a physical space but also a political, historical, and cultural space. Therefore, the naming of this space reflects a fusion of various factors: it represents not only natural attributes but also the accumulation of history and concentration of culture. In this study, we used semiotic methodology, specifically the relationship between “signifier” and “signified,” to link the apparent form of city names, such as street names, with deeper connotations—such as the intention of domination and the consideration of political and economic interests—in a symbolic context. This approach allows for an examination of the colonial operation. Through the semiotic discursive process, the abstract colonial consciousness is stripped from the construction of concrete spatial names, thus deepening historical understanding through a review of historical facts.
