Abstract

The present study aims to explore the negative interaction with his mother at family home adult with autism spectrum disorders living at group home. The participant studied is an adult with autism spectrum disorders, who lives at a group home in a welfare center in ‘S’ city and visit his family home on the weekends. For this purpose, a participant observation, a qualitative method, was conducted together with a preliminary study including the interview with the mother and observation the participant’s life in the group home. The participant observation has been conducted for about 1.5 years, and systematic procedural methods, such as preliminary observation, focused observation, follow-up observation, in order to minimize the problems that a long-term participant observation simply becomes the repetition of the same observational contents. This study discovered that the participant showed six types of negative interactions(infantile dependency, obsession, imputation of responsibility, sexual uncleanliness, isolation, and anxiety) with the mother at family home, and those six types were evenly observed during the life at the family home. These six types were common in that they are main ways of insisting for the satisfaction of his needs or desire. These results will contribute to the guidance to the successful conditions under which adults with autism spectrum disorders living at group home can improve their abilities for independent living.
