교사의 관점에서 바라본 자폐장애유아

본 연구는 자폐장애 유아에 대해 교사들이 어떤 관점을 가지고 있는지를 알아본 것이다. 이를 위해 통합교육현장에서 자폐장애가 있는 유아와 그렇지 않은 유아를 함께 지도한 교사들을 심층 면담하여 이들이 자폐장애 유아들을 어떤 관점으로 바라보고 있는지를 조사하였다. 그 결과 교사들 대부분은 자폐장애의 진단적 특징으로 알려진 의사소통에서의 결손, 상호작용에서의 결손이라는 측면이 실제 교육 현장에서는 두드러지게 인식되지 않는다고 하였다. 또한 자폐장애 유아들이 눈치가 빠르다고 하였으며, 교사들의 경력이나 성별에 따라 상호작용에서 반응을 달리하는 경향을 보였다고 하였다. 그리고 학습 속도 면에서 처음에는 느린 반응을 보이지만 때에 따라서는 폭발적인 변화를 보이기도 한다고 하였다. 자폐장애 유아에 대한 교사들의 관점은 이들이 자폐장애 유아를 장기적으로 관찰하고 직접적으로 상호작용했기 때문에 발견할 수 있는 것으로 의학적 특성과는 다른 측면에서 바라본 것이다. 위와 같은 교사들의 관점은 의학적 관점이 보지 못하는 자폐장애 유아들의 장점을 발견할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This study explored how educators in inclusive education settings view young children with autism. Interviews were conducted with 10 teachers possessing experience in inclusive educational settings. Most of the teachers indicated that, since they interacted frequently with young children with autism, they were able to interpret the social interactions and communications of the children with others. Furthermore, young children with autism have a tendency to respond according to the type of teacher. They learn more slowly than their peers, but as time passes, their speed increases. These findings suggest that, in regard to the social interactions and communication of young children with autism, it is important to take note of the different interpretations provided by the teacher's perspective from the medical perspective.
