Abstract
During the 19th century, European powers, including Britain and France, competitively expanded into Africa and Asia, colonizing much of the region by the early 20th century. As the leading country of the era of imperialist expansion, the British Empire brought one-fifth of the world's population and one-quarter of the land surface of the earth under her flag before the First World War. Numerous armed conflicts, collectively known as colonial wars, were fought between the armies of Western powers and indigenous groups. How was Britain able to overcome fierce resistance from indigenous peoples with a small ground force to occupy and subsequently govern colonies? By leveraging the cohesion of a relatively organized force and the superiority of their weaponry, especially in terms of weapon systems, British ground forces were able to win several scales of battles, but in many cases, subsequent armed conflicts took the form of irregular and asymmetric warfare, such as sporadic terrorism and guerrilla warfare, where the enemy was hard to recognize. Charles Callwell was a pioneering researcher who synthesized and analyzed the various colonial wars fought by Western powers, including Britain, in the 19th century from the perspective of irregular warfare. He published Small Wars in 1896, setting a milestone in the study of colonial warfare. Therefore, this article examines, by using Callwell's book as a core source, the characteristics of British ground forces' warfare methods in the context of the asymmetrical colonial wars fought in Africa and India in the 19th century. In a broad sense, this article aims to examine the actual secret of how Britain was able to maintain and govern the world's largest colonies for a long period of time from the perspective of war history.
