Abstract

This study investigates why the standard Korean lexeme gamja denotes both “potato” and, in some dialects, “sweet potato.” Based on dialectal and documentary evidence, it offers a dialectological explanation for how gamja acquired dual meanings through the staggered introduction of the two crops on the Korean Peninsula. The term originates from the Sino-Korean reading of 甘藷 (gamjeo), which referred to the sweet potato. As sweet potatoes spread earlier from Busan to Jeolla and Jeju, forms in the gamja (< gamjeo) series were adopted there, while goguma became common in central and Gyeongsang regions. Later, potatoes introduced via North Hamgyeong diffused southward under names such as gamje/gamjae and gamja. In Jeolla and Chungnam, where gamja already meant “sweet potato,” new compounds like haji-gamja and buk-gamja emerged to specify “potato,” resulting in a polysemous distribution across Korean dialects.
