Abstract

This study examines the regional dialectal variations of the term goguma (sweet potato) and seeks to conduct a linguistic analysis and interpretation of the etymology of goguma, which serves as a representative form among the various dialectal terms associated with sweet potatoes. The term goguma is derived from the Japanese kanji words 孝子麻 or 孝子芋. In Korea, these Japanese kanji terms were directly borrowed and transcribed as 孝子麻, 孝子芋, or 효ᄌᆞ토란. Additionally, the Japanese pronunciation was also adopted, leading to transcriptions such as 古貴爲麻 or 古古伊文瓜. The transcriptions 古貴爲麻 and 古古伊文瓜 represent phonetic renderings of the Japanese pronunciation of 孝子麻. These forms appear to correspond to こうこいま [kōkoima] and こうこいいも [kōkoiimo], respectively. In particular, こうこいま [kōkoima] is considered a precursor to the modern term goguma. It is believed that our ancestors recognized this as a type of "ma" (yam or tuber) and combined the Japanese term こうこい (孝子, kōkoi) with the Korean word "ma". This linguistic synthesis is thought to have given rise to the modern standard form goguma.
