Abstract
This study is an autobiographical narrative by a researcher who has guided multicultural students for several years in bilingual speech contests. The purpose of this research is to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences through which multicultural students develop self-efficacy while participating in bilingual speech contests. After a theoretical exploration of bilingualism, self-efficacy theory, and narrative inquiry, the study aims to understand the factors contributing to the formation of self-efficacy among multicultural students in these contests—namely, mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and physiological/emotional states. The research keywords include multicultural students, bilingualism, bilingual speech contest, self-efficacy, mastery experience, modeling, social persuasion, and physiological/emotional information. Through narrative inquiry, the researcher constructed research texts in collaboration with three participants. The study focused on describing the participants’ experiences related to the four self-efficacy factors: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and physiological/emotional states. Narrative research based on self-efficacy formation factors holds significance through personal, practical, and social justifications. From a personal standpoint, the participants gained deep insights into their contest experiences, enabling self-reflection and career exploration. The practical justification lies in the potential of this study’s outcomes to serve as a guide for students, parents, and teachers preparing for bilingual speech contests. The social justification is found in the study’s potential to inform multicultural student adaptation and the development of bilingual education policies.
