Abstract

This study examines the aspects and significance of the humanistic landscape recorded by Joseon envoys on the land route they took from Dengzhou(登州), after arriving by sea route, to Dezhou(德州) during the period of the Ming-Qing transition(1621–1637), a journey necessitated by the Later Jin’s occupation of Liaodong. This route was a place where Joseon intellectuals could directly experience a part of the Zou-Lu(鄒魯) region, which they had admired through classics and historical texts. An analysis of the sea route travelogue(해로사행록) passing through Dengzhou reveals two patterns in the envoys’ recordings of the humanistic landscape. First, relics of past sages, such as Chunyu Kun’s former residence(淳于髡故里), were recorded in the travelogues only as brief background knowledge based on reading, without a direct visit due to the tight schedule. Second, famous gardens like Xinghua Villag(杏花村) or Zhang Yandeng’s Garden(張延登의 화원) were described in detail after direct visits and viewing, and poems(詩文) were left behind. Notably, these locations facilitated active cultural exchange with literati of the Ming dynasty, strengthening the envoys’ affection for and memory of the places, leading to their continuous recording in the travelogues. The Dengzhou-Dezhou land route was a crucial segment that transformed the Zou-Lu region, which had been a space for vicarious experience(追體驗) through reading for the Joseon envoys, into a space for actual experience and cultural exchange. This serves as an indicator that the envoys’ process of forming a ‘sense of place(場所感)’ deepened beyond merely confirming background knowledge to include on-site experience and interaction with people.
