Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the current status of infant music activities, teachers’ perceptions, and differences according to whether teachers had completed music education-related courseswork, thereby exploring the overall state of infant music education. To achieve this purpose, a survey was conducted with 446 teachers working in infant classes at daycare centers. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program through frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, chi-square (χ²) tests, and independent samples t-tests. The results of the study were as follows. First, infant music activities were mostly conducted daily in play-centered formats, lasting less than 15 minutes, and digital media were primarily used as teaching materials. Second, teachers perceived listening to music from various genres to be the most difficult activity. Third, teachers who had taken music education coursework during their preservice education showed higher awareness of the necessity of music education, greater demand for training and instructional methods, and a stronger tendency to consider infants’ interests and needs than those who had not. Fourth, regarding differences according to teacher training, teachers who had participated in music education–related workshops paradoxically perceived greater difficulties in teaching musical concepts, managing music activities, and using accompaniment media. This study empirically presented the actual conditions and perceptions of teachers in infant classes regarding music activities and provides meaningful implications for setting directions in infant music education and for the development of teacher training and related programs.
