Abstract

This study analyzed the composition and storytelling style of Homer Hulbert’s Omjee the Wizard (1925), and evaluated Hulbert’s reinterpretation of Korean folktales from a transcultural perspective. The compositional features and storytelling style of Omjee the Wizard are as follows. First, Hulbert independently developed the story of the boy Soktary’s growth and the meeting with the wizard Omjee in the first half. Second, he set up the blind fortuneteller Omjee as a storyteller and took the form of telling folk stories to the boys in a cave. Third, he composed a series of animal tales such as ‘Curing the Sea King’s Daughter’s Illness’ and ‘Defeating the Villain Fox in the Mountains’ after the middle part. Fourth, he showed the fun of fantastical and humorous stories in the second half. The results of examining the aspects of transculturality in Korean culture as ‘accepting Korean folk culture’ and ‘connecting with American culture’ are as follows. First, Hulbert, while narrating the childhood of the protagonist Soktary, showed the lives and folk culture of ordinary Korean people in the 1920s, such as Ondol, Jiggy [a carrying case], a watermill, and laundry. Second, Hulbert attempted to create a characterization effect that distinguished his works from folktales by giving the human and animal protagonists Korean and Western names in different ways. Third, the painter Hildegard Lupprian painted children in Chinese clothing and animals in Western gentleman’s clothing. Among them, the appearance of Korean children wearing Qing Dynasty queues and clothing is the result of Orientalism. Fourth, the author actively edited and varied Korean folktales, and some of his works showed successful examples of transculture by creatively reinterpreting the characters, narratives, and themes of Korean folktales through parody.
