영문 한국전래동화의 한국설화 다시쓰기 양상－<콩쥐팥쥐 이야기>를 중심으로－

현재 미국에서 유통되는 영문 한국전래동화집은 19세기 말 20세기 초에 출간된 영문 한국설화집의 영향을 받았으며, 이후의 영문 한국전래동화집끼리도 영향관계가 있음을 볼 수 있었다. 현재 유통되는 <콩쥐팥쥐 이야기>의 6개의 영문판을 대상으로 고찰해본 결과는 다음과 같다. 한국의 설화와 비교해볼 때 영어권 독자를 위해 한국문화를 강조하려는 경향이 있지만, 잘못된 부분들도 있었다. 그리고 어린이 독자를 위해 부분적인 개작들이 있었고, 전체적으로 <신데렐라>와 많이 습합되어 한국 <콩쥐팥쥐 이야기> 고유의 화소가 많이 사라져, <신데렐라>이야기와 너무 똑같아서 지루하다는 독자평까지 나왔다. 따라서 어린이 독자를 고려하면서 최대한 한국고유의 화소를 반영하는 것이 바람직한데, 콩쥐와 팥쥐의 일하기 내기담, 엄마가 환생한 암소 화소, 팥쥐와 팥쥐 엄마에 대한 정당한 응징담이 반영되어야 한다. 또한 콩쥐를 나약하게 만드는 직녀 또는 선녀들, 도깨비의 조력이나 콩쥐의 외모를 팥쥐엄마가 질투한다는 식의 언급은 현대의 어린이에게는 부적절한 내용이며, 심지어 원래 한국의 설화 각편에는 없는 화소이므로 삭제되어야 한다. 한국의 전래동화는 한국 문화의 전달체이다. 미국학교 교재에 실려 있거나, 영향력 있는 출판사가 간행한 한국 전래동화의 파급력은 매우 크다. 이 중에서 잘못된 한국 전래동화의 서사를 바로 잡는 것은 영어권 어린이 독자들이 한국문화를 올바르게 이해하는 데에 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 이상의 논의들이 후일 영문 한국 전래동화 뿐 아니라 한국의 전래동화 다시쓰기에도 긍정적인 영향을 주기를 바란다.
Abstract
English versions of Korean fairytales in the United States have been influenced by the Korean folktales written in English from the late nineteenth century to the twentieth century. Further, the English versions of Korean fairytales have influenced each other. The study conducted on the English versions of the Story of Kongjwi and Patjwi found that English versions of Korean fairytales tend to emphasize the unique culture of Korea for English-speaking readers although they were ambiguous. Moreover, they were partly adapted to children, similar to The story of Cinderella. In the process of adaptation, the unique Korean motifs have been neglected. Therefore, it is desirable to reflect the unique Korean motif considering children as the readers. Motifs that comprise of the tasks performed by Kongjwi and Patjwi, the incarnation of Kongjwi’s mother as a cow, and the punishment for Patjwi should be reflected in the adapted version. In addition, the presence of a fairy or goblins as assistants and the jealousy of Patjwi’s mother toward Kongjwi are inappropriately represented at present. These motifs have not originated from Korean folktales. Korean fairytales convey Korean Culture. We have to amend the incorrect narratives of Korean fairytales in English in order to make Korean culture more comprehensible to English-speaking readers.
