Abstract
This interpretive case study examined the process by which an early childhood teacher in a three-year-old class, lacking prior understanding of new materialism, developed practical knowledge about the agency of materials while implementing the class curriculum. Key analytical materials included transcripts of in-depth teacher interviews, teacher journals, institutional documents, researcher journals, and other class curriculum examples, undergoing a multi-layered analysis process through repeated interpretation by the researcher. The findings were analyzed under the themes: ‘first steps: trying together as decided by the learning community’, ‘considering what might be needed’, ‘feeling invisible matter’, ‘experiencing complex entanglements’, and ‘various practical knowledge about matter becoming alive’. Based on this, the discussion argued that the class curriculum requires consideration of unquantifiable, yet potent forces—such as the age and gender ratio of young children, the entanglement between children and teachers, and the teacher’s attitude toward inquiry. Furthermore, while the teacher was forming practical knowledge about the agency of materials, she did not clearly recognize this. Therefore, it was suggested that future teacher education should prioritize focusing on the knowledge generated in the classroom and apply methods to continuously interpret it based on theory.
