Abstract
This article examines the transformation of visuality in contemporary media, foregrounding the ways algorithmic operations preemptively intervene in human perception. Against this backdrop, the article proposes the concept of Anticipated Visuality to capture a sensory-political configuration in which data-driven prediction preformats sensation, allows probabilistic patterns to function as objective fact, and thereby generates new norms. To specify how Anticipated Visuality operates, the article mobilizes two theoretical concepts. First, apophenia, conventionally understood as the misperception of patterns in data, is reframed as a structural problem situated within a sensory-political field. Second, feed-forward, in which technical operations precede human perception, is examined in terms of temporality and the preemption of sensation. Taken together, these two axes converge in machinic affect generated by an interface-coupled human–machine sensory system, which redistributes visibility and reconfigures the terrain of the ethical. Building on this theoretical framework, the article analyzes Nicolas Gourault’s documentary Their Eyes (2025). Focusing on the film’s use of semantic segmentation imagery and its visual structuring, it demonstrates how Anticipated Visuality is concretely manifested and how visuality produced through the disjunction between machine vision and human sensing contributes to the structuring of reality. Finally, the paper argues that contemporary digital labor depends on largely invisible data-labeling work in the Global South and, through algorithmic computation, enacts a biopolitics that configures norms and exceptions. In this light, Anticipated Visuality is proposed as an analytic tool for interrogating contemporary media systems that, under the veneer of technological objectivity, obscure labor exploitation and structural violence.
