Abstract

This study examines, from a techno‑historical perspective, the digital transition and early industrialization of visual effects (VFX) in Korean cinema between 1994 and 2007. Drawing on literature review and case analysis, it argues that, within a domestically resource‑constrained environment, digital compositing was strategically adopted to accelerate the transition; subsequently, the introduction of global‑illumination (GI)–based rendering, mediated by render farms and production pipelines, catalyzed division of labor and mass production, steering a shift from small‑studio‑centered practices to a pipeline‑based production system. These developments are interpreted as a compressed sequence of a late‑industrialization (catch‑up) trajectory—namely, the rapid absorption of external technologies, adaptive innovation tailored to local conditions, and the industrial internalization of production processes, workforce, and infrastructure. The contribution of this study is to conceptualize the digital turn of Korean cinema and VFX as an interaction among technology, process, and infrastructure, to frame it as a catch‑up pathway of late industrialization. The study also acknowledges limitations arising from the scarcity of quantitative production data and oral‑history archives, and calls for systematic documentation and analysis of the history and technical achievements of Korean VFX.
