Abstract

Since the late 1990s, the integration of digital technologies into film making―followed by the rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI)― has catalyzed a profound reconfiguration of cinematic visuality. More specifically, the cultural logic and the politico―economic imperatives of late capitalism―now definitive of the twenty-first-century high-tech media ecology-exert a necessary and constitutive influence on the ontology of contemporary cinema. Within this context, cinematic regimes of visuality are not fixed or essential but are historically contingent systems that emerge through shifting configurations of power, technology, and capital. The intensification of information technologies and networked infrastructures has transformed not only cinematic production and spectatorship but also the broader organization of capital. At the core of this transformation lies the computer as a universal medium of convergence, whose algorithmic logic has provoked renewed debates around the identity, boundaries, and future of cinema. The discourse of post-cinema thus engages with fundamental ontological questions: What was cinema? What is it now? And what might it become? Among these developments, the emergence of computational cinema marks a particularly dramatic shift. Characterized by its immaterial digital form, non-indexical visual data, algorithmic editing, and machine learning-driven vision systems, computational cinema displaces the camera as the central apparatus of image capture and introduces new logics of image generation and perception. These systems not only produce novel spectacles but also retrain the act of seeing itself―rendering the imperceptible visible and rendering visible things opaque―ultimately reshaping the conditions of spectatorship and the structures of attention. As this transformation is increasingly subsumed under the interests of capital, it inevitably raises critical questions of power, control, and visibility. This study brings together Jonathan Beller's theory of the cinematic mode of production, Paul Virilio's vision machine, Harun Farocki's operational images, and contemporary discussions of machine vision, in order to examine how emerging technologies establish new regimes of cinematic visuality and reshape the conditions under which visual perception is organized and politically governed.
