Abstract

The repression of paganism by Gratian, the emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire in the late 4th century, and the religious policy of Theodosius I, have been considered representative examples of the Christianization of the Roman Empire. At the end of his reign, Gratian not only demolished the Altar of Victory(Ara Victoriae) but also abolished the privileges of the state cult(sacra publica) that had been performed publicly since the Republican era. The Altar of Victory Affair, developed by the court, senate, and church in response to these measures, has been interpreted as a typical case of religious conflict between Christianity and paganism. However, the Altar of Victory Affair occurred during a period of political upheaval in the Roman Empire in the late 4th century, in conjunction with the process of Christianization of the ruling class. This study specifically focuses on the synchronic relationship between that affair and the factional politics and power shifts under the Valentinian Dynasty. The decisive cause of the Altar of Victory Affair was the factional conflict and the power shift within the ruling class in the western part of the empire during the Valentinian dynasty. From the beginning of Gratian's reign, the Ausonii, consisting of the Gallic landowners, led state affairs with the Roman pagan nobles, including Symmachus. However, their influence began to decline in the late 370s when the center of power shifted to northern Italy following the invasion of the Goths. During this period, the Anicii-Probi and the new Christian aristocrats, who were mostly former court officials, increased their political influence and sought to replace the traditional political culture that embodied the political and socio-economic prestige of the pagan nobles. Accordingly, at the end of 382, they petitioned Valentinian II to remove the Altar of Victory and abolish public support for the state cult. This attempt was in line with the interests of the authorities in the court, where the Ausonii had disappeared. Therefore, it could be implemented as an actual measure. In 384, Symmachus petitioned Valentinian II to withdraw this measure undertaken by his predecessor, Gratian. Considering the preceding political context, simply defending pagan traditions against Christians was not Symmachus' primary concern. Rather, Symmachus sought to secure his political status once again from the court through the restitution of the state cult, which symbolized a friendly relationship between the emperor and the Roman nobles.
