Abstract
Constantine’s process and reasons for converting to Christianity have consistently received much attention. This subject has provoked a great deal of controversy, because we find some inconsistencies in the testimonies of the church historians and pagan writers. The contemporary church historians, including Eusebius and Lactantius, stated that before the battle of Milvian Bridge, Constantine converted to Christianity after he saw a vision of the Cross. In contrast, some non-literary sources and records of pagan writers indicate that Constantine initially succeeded sun-worship from his father, and maintained his religion until 324. Even though such evidence contradicts the claims of church historians, many scholars from the late 20th century have overlooked this fact and have shown tendency to trust their records of Constantine’s conversion in 312. The purpose of this study is to examine his religion and religious policies from both Christian and non-Christian sources. Also, the study seeks to explore the process and causes behind Constantine’s acceptance of Christianity, from religious and political perspectives. The study reveals that Constantine’s conversion was a gradual process which had taken place over decades, rather than an instantaneous one. His sun worship based on monotheism and a relatively small number of Christians in the West affected his gradual acceptance of Christianity. Also, the political circumstance in which Constantine had to take neutral position between Pagans and Christianity played a critical role in his gradual adoption of Christianity. Therefore, his decision to have Christians as his partners was not a mere coincidence.
