Abstract

Cultural encounters of the polytheistic traditional culture of Rome and the monotheistic new culture of Christianity in the late Roman Empire have resulted in various cultural phenomena. This phenomenon can be observed in 380 when Christianity officially declared as the national religion of the Roman Empire and began to become a so-called “imperial Church” in the Roman Empire. In particular, in the Church of Ambrosius in Milan in the 4th century, which included the periods before and after the state religion of Christianity in the late Roman Empire, the cultural coexistence, fusion, acceptance, exclusion, assimilation and transformation of the two cultures appeared and this place war a festival. The traditional festival culture of Rome has developed itself in that ancient festivals have been killed, new festivals (games and emperor worship) have been made, and Christian festivals of the 4th century also expanded and developed into ceremonies, worship, and martyr celebrations etc. The two festivals are conflicting with each other in spirit and values. However, ina transitional situation, two festivals have coexisted and have moved forward, replacing their culture or reacting to their cultural elements, It was a way of developing. This is not the result of political power or religious exclusiveness, but rather the phenomenon of 'the Romanization of Roman culture and the Romanization of Christian culture' which is emerging from the viewpoint of the development of human culture. The two cultures in the cultural transition eventually selected a suitable culture that could contain new ideologies and values in the new era, or were transforming or assimilating to create a culture that would be accepted past the present fusion.
