Abstract

This paper aims to introduce how we selected sentential examples for audioservice of <Korea University Korean Dictionary> and to discuss someconsiderations in order to choose proper examples. As the basis for our discussion,we propose the notion of ‘auditorily presented example’. It is an example to beunderstood by listening first from audio materials, while existing examples areunderstood only by silent reading from written things. There is a delicate butcrucial difference between auditorily presented example and visually presentedexample, which is a term for existing example written in dictionary, in respect ofselection criteria of proper examples. This difference should be considered bylexicographers when they select examples for recording. To select more proper examples to be presented auditorily, we chose either aliterary example or a colloquial example in according to a feature of relatedheadword. It was quite important to be selected most suitable sentence for the useof headword and fine colloquial examples as well as literary examples. Secondly,we considered which sentence was more natural to read aloud or utter and thennormally chose relatively concise sentence with frequently used sentence style. Some examples were somewhat modified to be more natural by altering verbalendings or changing the order of words, etc. Thirdly, we tried to choose sentencesthat have proper contents. Users who listen to auditorily presented examplesappear to have quite strict acceptability in terms of contents of examples. Thus, examples for recording need to be selected with more strict and detailed criteria.
