Abstract
This study examines how Yeom Mu-woong’s working experience at Shingumunhwasa Publishing Company, which had been marginalised in his critical career, formed the decisive foundation for his subsequent critical trajectory and the character of the journal, Quarterly Changbi. In particular, focusing on the Complete Works of Modern Korean Literature and a textbook, Standard Composition, which he worked on at the time, this study looks into the process of differentiation within the generation, and the birth of the popular literature theory. While working at Shingumunhwasa Publishing Company, Yeom Mu-woong was responsible for selecting works, requesting commentary, and reviewing them for the Complete Works of Modern Korean Literature. Furthermore, under President Lee Jong-ik, Singumunhwasa Publishing Company adhered to a “rewriting” editorial policy conscious of its readership. The textbook, Standard Composition, for the second curriculum period, effectively authored by Yeom Mu-woong, elevated students’ lived experiences and language to the centre of education, dismantling the hierarchy of exemplary writing. This study seeks to reposition the status of Shingumunhwasa Publishing Company within Korean literary history, attempting to “rewrite” the history of 1960s criticism not merely as a narrative of discontinuity, but as a site where continuity and intersections occurred.
