Abstract
This study examines how Yeom Mu-ung’s literary criticism redefined the concepts of “nation” and “people(minjung)” within the historical and democratic contexts of modern Korean literature. The nation signifies not state nationalism but the pursuit of decolonized subjectivity, while the people represent a collective agent of freedom and equality. Yeom viewed literature as a social practice reflecting the divided nation’s suffering and the people’s democratic struggle. Through analyses of Shin Kyung-rim’s poetry and Song Ki-suk’s fiction, the paper shows how Yeom realized realist representation and democratic subject formation in the idea of people’s literature. Finally, it argues that Yeom’s discourse evolved toward a democratic orientation after the Cold War, revealing that the intertwined ideas of nation and people remain living mirrors of democracy in contemporary Korean literary thought.
