Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on the crisis of democracy that Korean society faced due to the President's declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024, by reading Han Kang's "Human Acts" and posing questions to expand the discourse on state violence and democracy. Liberal education should transition its perspective from democracy as an institution and procedure to democracy as a culture and attempt to reflect on the forces and capacities that constitute a democratic community. The role of liberal education is to cultivate the thinking and practical abilities that enable citizens to articulate their rights and become subjects who create equal and autonomous solidarities. The following questions were posed, centering on Han Kang's "Human Acts": First, how can citizens resist the dehumanization and deprivation of sovereignty caused by state violence? Second, how is the solidarity and community of citizens resisting violence possible? The core of the discussion on the first question is that dismantling state violence requires breaking away from the anti-communist ideology, a cultural level of violence. As demonstrated not only by the events of May 18 but also by various instances of state violence, the red-baiting used to designate internal enemies in Korean society was a cultural violence that deprived all members of their equal rights and plunged democracy into crisis. Through the second question, the study reflected on the internal strength of citizen solidarity and community by revisiting the citizen community that resisted state violence during May 18. As depicted in "Human Acts," the solidarity of citizens resisting state violence in May 18 led to the birth of a community that protected and cared for neighbors. The citizen community, sharing food and blood, practiced mutual care and demonstrated the potential of a life community. The role of liberal education in creating democratic and egalitarian communities lies not in providing definitive conclusions or certainties but in offering more experimental thought on democracy. After martial law, liberal education regarding democracy should expand the sense of democracy as a culture and explore what capacities are needed to create interdependent communities.
