본 연구는 올리브 키터리지(2008)의 노년 재현에 나타나는 ‘탈정형화’의 양상을 탐색한다. 이 소설에 재현되는 ‘탈정형화’ 양상의 특징으로서 네 가지 ‘퀴어성’을 지적할 것이다. 우선, 젊음과 늙음, 건강과 질병 등의 이분법이 어떻게 해체되는지 밝힘으로써 노년=쇠퇴라는 쇠퇴 이데올로기로부터의 ‘일탈’을 지적할 수 있다. 둘째, 올리브 키터리지에 재현되는 우울감을 노화에 연루되는 부정적인 정서로 보는 대신에, 상실을 잊지 않고 받아들이는 일종의 ‘퀴어 멜랑콜리아’의 정치적 감정으로 해석할 것이다. 셋째는 이성애 중심주의와 혈연 중심주의의 ‘가족 만들기’와 그것의 해체에 관한 탐색이며, 마지막으로 ‘실패’에 대한 감정을 문자 그대로 ‘실패’가 아니라, 신자유주의적 능력주의 담론의 문제점을 파고드는 노년의 ‘퀴어성’으로 탐색할 것이다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 퀴어성의 특징을 탐색함으로써, 노년에 대한 지배적인 규범인 쇠퇴 이데올로기의 문제를 지적하고 그에 대한 저항을 드러내는 데 목적이 있다.
Abstract
This essay explores de-stereotyping aspects of the aged represented in Olive Kitteridge. It points to queerness as the de-stereotyping in four ways. To begin with, by way of examining the destruction of the hierarchical opposition between the youth and the old, wellness and disease, it reveals queerness as the de-normatization of the aged. Second, it sheds lights on private depression as a political/public feeling, or queer melancholia of the loss, not pathologizing depression as the negative one engaged with aging. Third, it examines the queer aspect of the destruction of constructing the hetero-normative family, and the fourth, it explicates the queer art of the aged ‘failure’ which contributes to revealing the problematic neo-liberal ableism. To summarize, to investigate how the queerness is represented in this novel leads to debunk the decline ideology of the aging.
