시민사회와 교양교육의 민주성 강화를 통한 비판적 교양교육의 구성

오늘날 신자유주의적 세계화 국면을 맞이하여 공리주의적 실용성과 시장주의적 효율성이 득세하면서 국가와 시장의 폭력을 감시하고 견제해야 할 교양교육의 비판적 기능이 약화되고 있다. 이를 방지하려면 새로운 민주적 시민사회에 조응하는 시민의 민주적 교양 능력을 고취하여야 한다. 시민의 교양 능력은 비판적 민주시민의 능력에 달려 있다. 국가와 시장에 대한 시민사회의 공정한 감시자로서 역할을 제대로 하려면 권력에 종속되지 않는, 비판적인 교양시민을 필요로 한다. 비판적 시민의 양성을 위해서는 ‘비판적’ 교양교육을 필요로 한다. 비판적 교양교육을 위해서는 시민사회의 ‘civil’의 개념과 교양교육의 ‘liberal' 개념의 민주성을 강화시켜야 한다. 즉, 시민성에서 시민권으로 강화된 ‘civil’의 민주성과 교양교육의 ‘liberal'의미를 동시에 강화하여야 한다. 그렇게 해야 ‘비판적 교양교육’의 구성이 가능할 것이며 나아가 민주적 시민사회의 구성 또한 가능할 것이다. 만약 양자의 조응이 잘 되지 않는다면 민주적 시민사회의 공고화는 더욱 위태롭게 될 것이다.
Abstract
Nowadays, entering on the phase of neoliberal globalization, liberal arts education which influenced the communitarian life of citizen has eroded by prevalence of utilitarian pragmatism and market-driven effectivity day by day. So, the critical function of civil society which must examine and check state and market, has weakened. Thus, educated/civilized citizens who should be the subject of civil society fell into petit-citizen. If we prevent from this, we must encourage critical capacities of citizen applying to new democratic civil society. Civility capacities of citizens depend on latent capacities of participatory democratic citizen. A proper role as impartial spectator on state and market will require educated/civilized citizen with autonomous, critical capacities without a rein of power. Cultivation of critical Bildung/culture of citizen requires critical liberal education, which is core of civil society. It must acquire the critical meaning of 'civil'. Therefore, critical liberal education is necessary for being spreaded well beyond 'civicness/civility', being enlarged into 'citizenship'. And we must require the political meaning of 'liberal' of liberal education which corresponds it. Thus, it will be possible to reconstruct democratic civil society. Therefore, both democratic civil society and critical liberal education will fit well. If both don't work, the consolidation of democratic civil society will be more dangerous.
