Abstract

Spy is a person who is born over the boundary and inevitably has anidentity given unilaterally from sovereign power. However, somenarrations go forward beyond places of nation and anti-communism thattry to continuously put the spies at a same party of plot. Spies are thebeings that are locked in such rules and boundaries of exclusion as set bystatutory territory of a nation-state. In the literary works we addressed, spies and people who have memories about them resist or refuse theseboundaries, and they sometimes show any tendency to go through theirpersonal real memories to reproduce face of other person staying in thearea of exclusion. Seo Gi-won's “Half-holiday” cuts across a commonidea of fear for spy and captures the fields of his contemporary politicaldiscourses. Choi In-hun's “Geumo Sinhwa” is an epic story that acombination of South Koreans' curse at communist guerilla and theirdesires for capital causes the burial of a person - who has dreamed ofsecret room to evade from dark reality - in the water of Imjingang River, asymbol of national division. The narrative of Song Gi-suk's “A BufferZone” shows writing a novel as a part of practices that cut across acontemporary strategic crack called ‘spying discourses.’ Yi Byeong-ju'sThe Age of Spy: Narration and Marginal Man of National Division Diaspora“Pierrot and Chrysanthemum” brings a question about how a fictionalnarrative could deliver spying story's contemporary nature as an incident. In the same context of novel works mentioned above, Park Sun-nyeo's“Which Paris” tries to depict a new narrative about separation on thefoundation of narrative about self-decision to resist legal territory forcedby sovereign power. The ceaseless comeback of emerging images about spies excludedunder the pressure of cold war situations and anti-communismdemanded by national authority may be really a significant discovery inthe narrative of Korean literature that was locked in circuit ofanti-communism away from unimaginable outside world. Spies asmarginal men, who were identified as target of punishment orassimilation in the domain of regulations and administrations in acontrolled nation-state after national liberation, dream of any placebeyond their identity endowed. This dream may be a meaningfuldiscovery in that it can help make a new exploration into any subjectivityof marginal men.
