교차성에 바탕한 비판적 다문화 리터러시 교육의 방향 -김애란의 「가리는 손」을 중심으로-

이 글은 ‘교차성(intersectionality)’이 여러 차별이 복합적으로 작용하는 현대 사회에 중요한 시사점을 제공한다고 보고, 그것에 바탕을 둔 비판적 다문화 리터러시 교육의 방향을 모색하는 데 목적을 둔다. 교차성이란 인종, 계급, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티, 민족, 국가 등을 상호 배타적으로 작동하는 독립체가 아니라, 복합적인 사회 불평등을 함께 구성하는 것으로 보는 비판적 통찰력을 말한다. 이러한 개념은 각 사회 집단을 균질화·본질화하는 시각에서 탈피하여 범주 내부의 차이에 주목하도록 하며, 차별과 억압의 구조를 구체적으로 밝혀내는 데에도 유용성을 지닌다. 다문화주의의 여러 흐름 중에서 특히 비판적 다문화주의와 맞닿아 있는 교차성의 관점은, (한)국어교육의 측면에서는 다문화 리터러시 논의로 구체화될 수 있다. 따라서 이 글은 교차성에 바탕한 비판적 다문화 리터러시를 이 시대의 핵심 역량으로 제시하고, 한국 문학 교육의 관점에서 그러한 교육의 가능성을 논하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 김애란의 단편소설 「가리는 손」에 나타난 인종·연령·젠더·계급 등의 교차성 양상을 분석하고, 뱅크스(J. A. Banks)의 다문화 리터러시 논의를 토대로 하여 교육의 방향을 ‘인식’, ‘비판’, ‘실천’의 세 가지 차원으로 제시하였다.
Abstract
This article explores the direction of critical multicultural literacy education based on intersectionality. Intersectionality is a critical insight that views race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nation, ability, age, etc. as constructing complex social inequialities together, rather than as mutually exclusive entities. Focusing on differences within the category, intersectionality overcomes the problem of homogenizing and essentializing social groups. Furthermore, it is useful in revealing the structure of discrimination and repression in detail. The concept of intersectionality relates to critical multiculturalism, and in the aspect of Korean education, it prompts discussion about multicultural literacy. Therefore, this study presents critical multicultural literacy based on intersectionality as a core capability for this era, and examines its educational feasibility from the perspective of Korean literature education. To this end, Kim Aeran's short story "The Covering Hand" was analyzed, and an educational direction is presented in terms of "recognition," "criticism," and "practice" based on J. A. Banks' discussion.
