Abstract

The purpose of this study is to focus on interculturality as a concept of identity demanded in this multicultural age and find out the methods of multicultural novel education to realize interculturality. Interculturality is a useful concept to seek the possibility of cultural assimilation being freed from distinction between natives and immigrants fixed in multicultural education, and it provides new perspectives to read multicultural novels. This author intends to read Pak Beom-sin’s novel, 『Namaste』, within the framework of interculturality. 『Namaste』 depicts the mixture of strangeness and familiarity as well as union and division that the main characters, the native woman and immigrant man, get to face within multicultural situations experiencing others to show how an individual’s identity comes to be formed in multicultural situations. At this point, it implies how multicultural novel education should deal with the matter of identity formation. In multicultural society, individuals’ identity gets to be formed complexly as diverse elements like family, gender, or social class stand against national identity. Multicultural novel education becomes education to form intercultural identity by approving that form of identity. Therefore, it has ethical and practical meaning to discuss novel education in the aspects of interculturality. It is because understanding strangeness coming from experience of others in association with familiarity is attributed to the attitude of seeking bond of sympathy even within cultural difference, that is, ethics of interculturality.
