Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore a valid ethical foundation and direction for vegetarianism by analyzing the positions and debates of Peter Singer and Tom Regan on animal ethics. The number of vegetarians in Korea has been increasing. Concerns about "animal welfare" and "animal rights" play a significant role in this trend. These two terms were emphasized by Singer and Regan, respectively. However, limiting our understanding of their arguments to animal welfare or animal rights alone oversimplifies their views on meat-eating and vegetarianism. This study proceeded with the premise that their positions on vegetarianism were formed through mutual understanding and debate. Furthermore, by comparing Singer and Regan's positions, this study examined which theory is more suitable as a foundation for vegetarianism. Finally, by referencing their arguments, this study suggested a desirable direction for vegetarianism.
