현대 사회에서 채식은 더 이상 특정 집단의 식습관이 아니다. 이것은 하나의 문화현상이며 사회적인 흐름이라고 할 수 있다. 많은 채식주의자들은 채식을 통해 영양학적인 이유 이상의 무언가를 실현하려고 노력한다. 이를 위해 윤리적 채식주의를 표방하는 이들은 레건으로 대표되는 동물 권리론과 싱어로 대표되는 동물 복지론을 철학적 근거로 삼고 있다. 이 중에서도 지나치게 관념적인 레건과 달리 실천의 영역을 강조하는 싱어의 이론이 보다 많은 호응을 얻고 있다. 그러나 윤리적 채식주의는 채식주의들만의 윤리적 명제가 되어가는 것 같다. 동물의 복지라는 본래의 목적을 상실하고 마치 그것이 보다 우월한 문화 양식인 것처럼 포장되고 있다. 이 글은 윤리적으로 옹호 가능한 채식은 동물의 복지를 향상시킬 때 뿐 이라는 것을 전제로 하여, 그러한 결과를 도출하기 위해서 육식을 완전히 배제한 완전 채식주의가 필요하지 않다는 것을 제시하고자 한다. 그리고 더 나아가 동물 복지를 위해서는 절제된 육식을 통한 윤리적 육식주의가 보다 효율적이라는 것을 보이려고 시도한다.
Abstract
In modern society, vegetarianism is no longer the diet of a particular group. This is a cultural phenomenon and a social trend. Many vegetarians try to realize something more than a nutritional reason through vegetarianism. To this end, ethical vegetarians use the animal rights theory represented by Regan and the animal welfare theory represented by Singer as the philosophical basis. Singer's theory, which emphasizes the realm of practice, is gaining more favor among them, unlike But ethical vegetarianism seems to be becoming an ethical proposition for vegetarians. It loses its original purpose of animal welfare and is packaged as if it were a superior culture. The article suggests that veganism excluding meat is not necessary in order to produce such results, provided that ethically viable vegetarianism is only to improve the welfare of animals. And furthermore, for animal welfare, we try to show that ethical restrained eating meat is more efficient.
