Abstract
Comics hold a unique significance not only in complementing the shortcomings of narratives mediated by words, but also in conveying new information and imagination through a faster and more diverse visual medium. In particular, Cai Zhizhong(Tsai Chih-chung)’s work can be evaluated in light of the way he symbolizes and refines information based on classical texts into comics, effectively conveying it to readers. In the 1980s and 1990s, when Cai’s classic comics were published, Taiwan experienced a free atmosphere where some sought to reestablish the island’s culture from an independent perspective, while others focused on mainland China, expanding cross-strait exchanges, and revisiting the roots of Chinese culture. It was in this sociocultural climate that Cai presented works based on classic themes, and Taiwanese readers found them engaging. In the 2010s, when Cai Zhizhong settled in mainland China via Canada, China’s global standing was rising and a domestic atmosphere was promoting the revitalization of Chinese traditions. His classic works, originally published 20-30 years earlier in Taiwan, were being republished and incorporated into traditional school curriculums, enjoying renewed popularity. The works of the cartoonist, now approaching his eighties, have been circulating across Taiwan and mainland China for decades, and have been translated and published in English as well as in the Chinese-speaking world, gaining global acclaim. This phenomenon is largely due to the fact that Cai’s works fit the political, economic, and socio-cultural situations of Taiwan and mainland China, but the bigger reason can be found in the fact that he interpreted Chinese classics into concise and humorous comics with Chinese characteristics, providing them to Taiwanese people and youth in the 1980s who wanted to learn traditional culture and standard Chinese, and that he approached youth in mainland China with educational meaning after the 2010s, when knowledge of classics was becoming fragmented, segmented, and vulgarized due to the Internet and mobile environment. As the use of transmedia in both classical and contemporary works increases globally, and the discovery and utilization of IP within traditional Chinese culture accelerates within China, it is expected that Chinese comics including Cai’s works will continue to receive attention for their artistic quality and expandability.
