Abstract
In Gi Hyeong-Do’s poetry, the void functions as a poetic device that simultaneously evokes the state of exception of the 1980s and renders visible the potentiality of existence placed outside legal protection. Grounded in Giorgio Agamben’s concepts of homo sacer and potentiality, this study analyzes the origins and modes of figuration of the void in Gi Hyeong-Do’s poetry and elucidates its ontological implications. In particular, it focuses on demonstrating that the void, formed under the conditions of the state of exception and homo sacer, exceeds a mere representation of deprivation and serves as a catalyst for existential transformation. Chapter II examines how the conditions of homo sacer—existence excluded from legal and ethical protection under the state of exception—are poetically articulated through the imagination of the void and images of vegetal existence. The disruption of normative order by sovereign violence is inscribed in the poet as profound trauma, from which the imagination of the void emerges. This imagination functions as a poetic mechanism that captures both the vulnerability of existence and the latent potential for survival. Chapter III analyzes the concrete configurations of the void and the manifestation of existential potentiality across three dimensions: the absence of voice and the dilemma of silence and testimony, the suspension of time and the qualitative transformation of existence, and emptiness(Heo) as a site of paradoxical salvation. The juxtaposition of opposing images and their semantic collisions generates aesthetic tension, through which existence standing at the threshold of annihilation is led to contemplate its own potentiality. Ultimately, the void in Gi Hyeong-Do’s poetry is not a sign of deprivation that fixes homo sacer within a state of exclusion, but a poetic condition that anticipates the possibility of another form of life. The rhetoric of the void constitutes a foundational aesthetic principle of Gi Hyeong-Do’s poetics and resonates with the way modern Korean poetry has continued to reflect on existential transformation even at the heart of despair.
