Abstract

This study aims to propose a methodology for constructing XML-based data for modern Korean literary criticism and to suggest its utilization strategies in the era of digital transformation and generative AI. While digital humanities have expanded in other fields, modern Korean literature research has been relatively passive in data construction due to copyright issues and the discipline’s emphasis on subjective “interpretation.” Consequently, most materials remain fragmented as unstructured data (PDF, HWP), limiting collaboration and knowledge accumulation among researchers. To address these limitations, this study proposes a customized XML schema (XSD) based on the TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) P5 guidelines, designed to transform texts into machine-readable structured data while reflecting the unique characteristics of literary criticism. By analyzing existing meta-criticism studies, this research identified “Quote” and “Interpretation” as core markup elements, alongside standard elements such as author, work, and term.Specifically, the schema is designed to structure the critic’s value judgments (affirmative, neutral, critical) through the <interp> element and to classify the types and genres of citations using the <quote> element, thereby database- izing the context of critical discourse. The construction of such XML data enables contextual exploration using XPath and XQuery beyond simple keyword searches. Furthermore, it lays the foundation for quantitative literary research, including the visualization of networks between critics and authors and the tracing of the conceptual history of critical terms. By converting the individual researcher’s interpretation process into a shareable data structure, this study contributes to overcoming the insularity of modern literature research and establishing a sustainable digital knowledge ecosystem.
