Abstract
This study examines the symbolism and cultural representations of seaweed soup(miyeok-guk) in contemporary Korean poetry, aiming to elucidate how this traditional ritual food has been reconfigured in modern poetic contexts. Seaweed soup, a representative food in Korean rituals of childbirth and birthdays, symbolizes the birth of life, recovery, and communal solidarity. Four poems were selected for analysis ― Baek Seok’s Jeokgyeong(寂境), Kim Su-Young’s Seaweed soup(miyeok-guk), Jin Eun-Young’s Kafka’s Lover, and Lee Jong-Min’s Commemoration ― to explore how the image of seaweed soup has expanded beyond its ritualistic function to encompass meanings of history, identity, gender, and everyday healing. The findings reveal three major trajectories of transformation: changes in ritual agents and practices, expansion of symbolic connotations, and processes of de-ritualization and re-contextualization. These results demonstrate that food imagery in literature functions not merely as background imagery but as a central device that mediates sociocultural contexts and poetic structures. This study highlights the significance of food as a medium in literary and cultural research, expanding the possibilities of interdisciplinary approaches.
