Abstract

This study explores how ‘Seoulnormativity’ operates and is reconstituted through the experiences of gay men in South Korea using location-based dating apps. Seoulnormativity is a social norm and urban fantasy that makes sexual minorities feel they must be in Seoul. While drawing from the North American concept of metronormativity, it reflects the specificities created by Korea's compressed modernization and Seoul's monopolistic status. From the perspective of platform urbanism, this study examines urban experiences mediated by digital platforms, combining mediascape and affect theory to analyze how location-based dating apps construct imaginary geographies of Seoul and attach different affects to different spaces. Through in-depth interviews with 16 gay men, the study reveals that location-based dating apps transform the Seoul-provincial hierarchy into immediate sensory experiences through the visual contrast between ‘black screens’ and ‘face-filled screens’. This operates as a mediascape, attaching positive affects to Seoul and negative affects to the provinces. The affects thus formed reinforce Seoulnormativity and produce new mediascapes, creating a circular structure. Simultaneously, this study examines sensory excess and affective tensions that emerge at the boundaries of Seoulnormativity. The ‘hyperspatial positionality’ enabled by teleport functions separates physical location from digital identity, while individual networks based on one-to-one relationships construct alternative forms of sociality that replace traditional collective communities. While these practices do not dismantle Seoulnormativity, they reveal complexities and tensions that the norm cannot fully control. By revealing the circular structure from mediascape to affect, from affect to Seoulnormativity, and back to mediascape, this study demonstrates how spatial hierarchies are reproduced at the everyday level in the era of platform urbanism. This suggests that spatial justice must attend not only to physical infrastructure but also to the unequal distribution of sensations and affects.
