Abstract

This study historicizes the process by which gay subcultures have been structured in relation to media evolution and provides arguments for the categorization of gay subcultural groups. Gay subcultures have undergone structural changes at the inflection point of the continuous development of media technologies such as PC communication, broadband Internet, and mobile media. PC communications influenced the transition of gay subcultures from oral to written culture and initiated the formation of online bonding spaces, while high-speed Internet communications, including images, reorganized gay men’s sexual stages online. Subsequently, mobile media, with its mobility and wireless connectivity, functioned as a part of the body, creating a digital space that mediated gay men's ongoing, real-time interactions with each other, characterized by an unprecedented fusion of bonding and sexuality. While we can understand gay subcultural spaces and groups through this mode of interaction, we can also understand cultural groups in the broader context of the sharing of cultural symbols and information through digital media. This pluralization of gay subcultural spaces points to the fact that individuals form multiple identities based on the practices of using each space. The increasing heterogeneity of actors' identities within the group stems from the fact that the boundaries of the community and the boundaries of symbol sharing are inconsistent as digital media widely mediate the symbols and information generated through close interaction. Therefore, to understand the boundaries of subcultural groups and the identities of their members, it is essential to consider the role of individual media as a key variable.
