Abstract

This study analyses the plaza politics that unfolded for approximately four months— from the proclamation of martial law on 3 December 2024 to the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol—through the concept of the ‘contact zone of parallel worlds.’ The term refers to a socio-spatial intersection in which two worlds that coexist yet seldom directly engage inhabit the same physical space while undergoing conflict, learning, and negotiation. Previous studies have conceptualised, on the one hand, ‘parallel worlds’ as heterogeneous groups that maintain independent systems of knowledge and experience, and on the other, ‘contact zones’ as spaces where mutual understanding and misunderstanding, collision and cooperation, and new possibilities emerge. By combining these notions, this study explores how two pairs of parallel worlds—(1) impeachment rallies vs. far-right rallies, and (2) street politics vs. party politics—coexisted, encountered one another, collided, and transformed within the plaza. The research is based on participant observation, field interviews, in-depth interviews, and documentary research. The analysis yields two primary findings. First, while the parallel worlds of impeachment rallies and far-right rallies were organised independently without direct interaction, far-right rallies expanded their influence by mobilising an identity of opposing the impeachment rallies. The two groups were present simultaneously in areas such as Gwanghwamoon, Yeouido, and Hannam-dong, and at times, physical and bodily contact shifted into cognitive and emotional contact. In particular, far-right rallies demonstrated characteristics of cognitive contact by actively benchmarking the formats and materials used in pro-democracy and impeachment rallies. Second, the parallel worlds of street politics and party politics actively sought physical and cognitive contact, sharing both the urgency of the National Assembly’s role and a desire for direct democracy. However, even within these interactions, tensions persisted, as divergent political views surfaced around key political junctures such as the presidential election and impeachment. Amid the increasing clarity of political parallel worlds, this study contributes to debates in urban politics and political geography by examining the workings of plaza politics entangled with people, materials, agendas, and resistance, and by analysing societal responses that emerged during the 3 December impeachment crisis.
