Abstract

This study comprehensively analyzes the construction of the meaning and boundaries of home for young LGBTQ+s through literature review and in-depth interviews. Upon leaving their heteronormative family homes, their independent living spaces allow for free expression of identity and interaction with close social networks. However, these independent homes often remain tied to the family home due to factors such as familial ties and economic reasons. In such cases, young LGBTQ+ individuals employ spatial strategies, such as adjusting the arrangement of belongings and the frequency of visits between the two homes, to alleviate tensions surrounding their living spaces. They also seek alternative spaces, like LGBTQ+ club rooms in universities, cafes, and neighborhoods like Itaewon and Hongdae, which offer the comfort of home. These alternative spaces, though, are not free from the pervasive influence of heteronormativity and the spatial inequality caused by their concentration in Seoul. This study aims to provide a multifaceted understanding of LGBTQ+s’ housing experiences by examining them across various spatial and relational dimensions, thus contributing to a more nuanced analysis of LGBTQ+ spaces.
