Abstract

Designing an effective brand story has become a key issue in marketing strategy. Although many studies show that underdog brand stories are more acceptable to consumers, underdog brand stories are not consumer-friendly in all situations, and some products or services may not be suitable for underdog brand storytelling. Therefore, this study examined the effect of product types (hedonic product/practical product) on consumer purchase intention according to brand story types (underdog/top-dog). It explored whether there is a moderating effect of the product types between the brand story types and the consumer's purchase intention, and verified whether there is a difference in the consumer's purchase intention in the situation of different product types by brand story types. The experiment of this study is 2 (Underdog vs. Top-dog) × 2 (Hedonic product vs. Practical product) Intergroup design was adopted, and two-way ANOVA was conducted. As a result of this study, first, it was found that the Underdog brand story will have a greater influence on consumers' purchase intention than the Top-dog brand story. Second, in the case of hedonic products, it was found that the underdog brand stories had a greater influence on consumers' purchase intention than the top-dog brand stories. Third, in the case of practical products, it was confirmed that the top-dog brand stories had a greater influence on the consumer's purchase intention than the underdog brand stories.
