Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the sequencing abilities and processes of 4- and 5-year-old children during unplugged activities and to examine differences based on age and gender. A total of 98 children from 4- and 5-year-old classes at A Kindergarten in Seoul participated in unplugged activities, which were modified and supplemented based on the activities developed by Tank et al. (2024). The results were as follows. First, about 80% of the children performed unplugged activities at level 1 or higher, and differences were found according to age and gender. 5-year-olds performed at higher levels than 4-year-olds, and boys performed at higher levels than girls. Second, regarding the sequencing processes, the children went through two steps: ‘finding logic’ and ‘applying logic.’ As the difficulty of the activities increased, the number of children who successfully completed each step decreased. 5-year-olds passed each step more frequently than 4-year-olds, while boys and girls showed similar performance across all levels except level 1. These findings suggest that unplugged approaches, conducted in contexts familiar to young children, are effective in assessing sequencing abilities, and emphasize the importance of analyzing sequencing processes to provide appropriate support based on young children’s developmental levels.
