Abstract
The purpose of this study is to measure changes in young children’s computational thinking abilities. After implementing coding play activities, 36 five-year-old children were sampled and observed for changes in their computational thinking. Data were collected using a computational thinking measurement rubric and observation. The collected data were analyzed using an intrinsic design method that prioritized quantitative data and integrated qualitative data including records of program participation and result interpretations, as supplementary (QUAN → qual). The results showed significant differences in all sub-elements of problem decomposition, pattern recognition, algorithms, abstraction, and debugging. Observations revealed that children progressively increased and refined behaviors such as exploratory problem-splitting to find clues, interactive rule application based on prior experience, task-staging to establish sequences, simplification strategies to reduce complexity, and trial-and-error actions to recognize errors and attempt alternatives. These findings are significant as they provide foundational data for exploring the necessity of coding education in early childhood and the direction coding education should take to enhance young children’s computational thinking skills.
