Abstract

This thesis is a case study that explores the details of mathematical knowledge and process embedded in unplugged coding activities with 5-years old children. Participants in the study were six 5-year-olds of the researcher’s kindergarten class located in Seoul. A sequence of unplugged coding activities was implemented and the children’s mathematical thinking in unplugged coding were qualitatively analyzed. Data was collected by a participant observation, a video recording, and various documents. The results showed that unplugged coding provided a fertile ground for mathematical experiences for young children. In the process of solving the problem presented in the unplugged coding activity, the children engaged in active search related to movement, direction, and location relationship. In addition, in order to find an efficient solution, such as setting an optimal path, the process of solving problems collectively together was actively carried out, such as sharing problems, trying various methods, using or comparing various representation forms, and reasoning based on prior experience. Such behaviors appear to be influenced by the type of unplugged coding activity, the design process, and the method of proceeding. In conclusion, unplugged coding is a hands-on and practical approach to teaching and learning mathematics for young children.
