Abstract
This study explores how the advent of generative artificial intelligence compels a fundamental reconsideration of the ontological status of educational technology. Modern education has traditionally centered on human reason and autonomy while reducing technology to a passive tool. However, a historical trajectory of media—from speech, language, and writing to print, electrical, digital, and AI technologies—reveals that technologies have always acted as formative agents in structuring educational practices, even as their agency has been systematically obscured. To address this tension, the study draws on Heidegger’s critique of technology, which interprets technology as a mode of revealing rather than a mere instrument, and Latour’s actor-network theory, which positions human and nonhuman entities as equally significant actors in educational assemblages. Furthermore, posthumanist and new materialist perspectives provide a theoretical horizon for decentering the human subject and recognizing the vitality and agency of material and nonhuman actors in educational contexts. Through these lenses, generative AI is not simply a new tool but a disruptive event that exposes and reconfigures the ontological conditions of education. The study concludes by suggesting that educational theory must move beyond the assumption of technology as a transparent medium and reconceptualize education as a hybrid field constituted by the entanglements of human and nonhuman actors.
