제6공화국 시대 문학상이라는 존재 양태에 대한 문학적 단상: ‘이호철통일로문학상’에 주목하여

이 글은 이호철통일로문학상에 주목하여 오늘날 한국문학과 결부된 가장 강력한 ‘욕망의 실천’이라 할 만한, 문학상의 존재 양태에 대한 조망을 시도한다. 그것은 이제는 시대착오적인 것이 되어버린 한국문학사의 태도와 입장을 제6공화국 문학 체제의 일각인 문학적 증여제도의 표상으로 전환한 일례이다. 이호철통일로문학상은 20세기 한국 현대문학의 시의성을 지속적으로 좇아 민주화 이후 한국문학 세계화의 제도적인 지원을 바탕으로 결정되었다. 그의 사후 이듬해 제정된 이호철통일로문학상은 민주화 이후 문학 제도의 수혜로 형성된 이호철이라는 저자기능의 권위를 ‘가장 덜 문학적인 공인’으로 전유하여, 세계문학을 향한 발신의 기획으로 전환해내는 데 일단은 성공한 것으로 보인다. 올해로 9회째를 맞아 또다시 갱신될 이호철통일로문학상은, 20세기 한국 현대문학사 거의 내내 시의성을 잃지 않고 부단히 활동한 소설가 개인을 기억하는 문학적 아카이브로 기능하는 중이다. 이로써 이호철은 그와 함께 활동했던 대다수 그와 동세대의 작가들과 다른, 예외적인 위치에 놓이게 되었다. 이호철통일로문학상은 제6공화국 시대 한국문학 체제에서, 문학상이라는 증여제도의 특이한 존재 양태를 시사한다. 그것은 한국문학 내부에 상존해온 세계를 향한 오래된 욕망을 시사하면서도, 그 문화적 위치상 결코 패권적일 수 없는 ‘글로벌 사우스적’ 보편성을 견지하며 존속해온 20세기 한국문학이 남긴 유산을 위태롭게 ‘보존’함과 동시에, 새로운 시대로 나아가고 있는, ‘세계 속 한국문학’의 현상태를 보여주는 일례이다.
Abstract
By focusing on Lee Hochul Literary Prize for Peace, this article attempts to investigate the mode of existence of the literary prize, which can be said to be the most powerful ‘practice of desire’ connected to Korean literature today. It is an example of transforming the attitude and position of Korean literary history, which has become anachronistic in a new era, into a representation of the literary gift system, the tip of the 6th Republic’s literary system. It was determined based on institutional support for the globalization of Korean literature after democratization, as a result of continuing to follow the timeliness of modern Korean literature in the 20th century. The Lee Hochul Literary Prize for Peace, which was established the following year after his death, seems to have succeeded for now in converting the authority of author function, which was formed as a beneficiary of the literary system after democratization, into a project of sending to world literature. The literary award, which will be renewed again this year for the ninth time, has served as a literary archive to remember individual novelists who have worked tirelessly throughout the history of modern Korean literature in the 20th century without losing his own timeliness. This put Lee Hochul in an exceptional position, different from many writers of his generation who worked with him. The Lee Hochul Literary Prize for Peace suggests the unique existence mode of the gift institution called the Literature Prize in the Korean literature system during the 6th Republic. It is an example of the status quo of Korean literature in the world, which is precariously “preserving” the legacy of Korean literature in the 20th century, which has maintained a universality that can never be hegemonic in its ‘global southern’ cultural position, while also precariously “preserving” the legacy of Korean literature in the world and moving into a new era.
