문학의 탈정치화와 포스트 담론의 파장 - 민주화 이후 한국문학의 전개와 쇠락

이 논문은 민주화 이후 이른바 ‘포스트 담론’이 한국문학에 미친 영향과 쟁점을 분석하기 위한 의도에서 쓰여졌다. 이 시기 한국문학의 변모를 이해하기 위해서는 1987년 6월 항쟁 이후 한국사회의 역사적 전개와 문학이 맺고 있는 관계에 주목해야 한다. 한국문학에서 이른바 ‘포스트 담론’이 수용되는 맥락에는 여러 원인이 있을 것이다. 첫째, 문학 내적 맥락에서는 지난 시대의 주도적인 문학론이었던 민족문학론과 창작방법으로서의 리얼리즘의 퇴조가 한 계기가 되었을 것이다. 미학적 전망이 확립되지 않은 상황의 혼란을 극복하고자 새로운 외래사조에 대한 관심이 폭발했던 것으로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 이 시기를 기점으로 한국의 정치적 민주화와 경제성장이 상당 부분 진척되었다는 점도 고려되어야 한다. 민주주의의 성숙과 경제성장은 문학의 문제의식을 정치에서 문화로 이동시켰다. 요컨대 취향의 영역에서 전개되는 감수성의 차이와 욕망의 표현 여부가 이 시기의 주된 문학적 의제가 되자, 이를 해명하기 위한 ‘포스트 담론’이 백가쟁명으로 수입되었던 것이다. 셋째, 동구 사회주의권의 몰락이 가져다 준 세계사적 충격에 대한 한 반응으로 포스트담론이 확산되었다. 이것은 넓은 의미에서 역사주의의 약화 또는 쇠락을 불러왔다. 문학에서도 변화된 현실을 어떻게 표현하고 분석할 것인가의 문제가 제기되었는데, 일부 소장문인들은 ‘포스트 담론’에서 그 가능성을 찾아보고자 했다. 그러나 한국문학에서의 포스트 담론은 그 풍부한 문제의식과는 별도로, 생산적인 기여를 했다고 보기 어렵다. 한국문학에서의 포스트 담론은 대개 과거에 대한 성급한 부정과 청산의 알리바이로 기능했다. 창작과 비평, 연구라는 문학의 세 측면에서 보았을 때, 탈식민주의를 포함한 포스트 담론이 끼친 영향은 비판적으로 평가될 가능성이 높다. 한국적 현실과 문학에 대한 정교한 인식에서 출발한 이론의 비판적 재검토는 여전히 우리에게 요구되는 문학적 태도이다.
Abstract
This paper is intended to analyze the issues of the influence so called ‘post’ discourse made on Korean literature after the democratization. In order to understand the transformation of literature at this period, the relationship between the historical evolution in Korean society after the uprising in June 1987 and literature should be noted. There must be several reasons for the acceptance of the ‘post‘ discourse in Korean literary world. First, the decline of both national literature discourse which was a leading theory of the past era, and realism as a creative method could be one reason. In other words, this can be read as the tremendous interest in new foreign literature trend to overcome chaotic situation which lacked certain aesthetic view. Second, the fact that political democratization and economic growth have fairly progressed at this point should be considered. The ripening of democracy and the economic growth shifted the issue of literature from politics to culture. In sum, as the degrees of sensibilities and expression of desire in the realm of taste became main literary agenda, ‘post’ discourse have been imported in various ways to explain that. Third, ‘post’ discourse have been spread as a reaction to the global impact of Eastern European socialist bloc’s collapse. In a broader sense, this caused the decline of historicism. The issue of expressing and analyzing changed reality in literature was raised. Some young writers attempted to find the possibility of such issues within the ‘post’ discourse. However, ‘post‘ discourse in Korea cannot be seen as a productive contribution to the literature not counting its rich critical questions. ‘Post‘ discourse in Korean literature mainly functioned as an alibi for hasty denial and settlement of the past. From the perspectives of creation, criticism, and research, the influences of ‘post‘ discourse including post-colonialism has high possibility of critical assessment. Critical reexamination on the theory from the elaborate awareness of Korean reality and literature is a literary attitude valid until today.
