Abstract
This paper offers a critical reappraisal of Pascale Casanova’s The World Republic of Letters from the perspective of Korean literature. Taking the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to Han Kang as a landmark event in literary history, the study reassesses the current position of Korean literature within ‘the world literary space’ and seeks to reinterpret Casanova’s insights into the structure and hierarchy of world literature in light of Korea’s literary experience. Focusing in particular on Korea’s longstanding aspiration for the Nobel Prize in Literature since the 1960s, the issue of translation, and Casanova’s remarks on the ‘globalization of literature’ at the 2000 Seoul International Forum for Literature, the paper investigates how her notion of the periphery’s challenge to the literary center has been realized in the Korean context. It also explores the points of tension between Casanova’s theory and the nationalist literary discourse advanced by the Changbi group, ultimately aiming to propose new directions for Korean literature in the ongoing discourse on world literature.
