Abstract

Since the mid-2010s, Korean-American narrative written with a basis in the discourse of identity politics has illustrated Korean-American reactions to the marginalization of racial and ethnic minorities in American society. These reactions fit broadly into two categories. One is to minimize racial and ethnic difference by entering into the center of American society, while the other is to remain on the periphery of American society and maintain racial and ethnic difference. Here there is a tendency for the former to be represented in the narrative of a female Subject while the latter is represented in the narrative of a male Subject. However this gendered narrative is not a result of a contrast in the actual lives of female and male Korean-Americans. From the perspective of a racial and ethnic minority like Korean-Americans in the United States, assimilation to American society is ultimately an acceptance of the position of the racialized Other, made inferior to whiteness, and this colonized status is understood as feminization. This is why the former narrative is represented as ‘feminine’ and the latter as ‘masculine.’ Yet this is only a difference in method, as both narratives, whether that of the female Subject or the male Subject, are premised on taking the dominant position as the only way to break free from the oppression and discrimination faced by minorities. This limitation can be seen as a limitation of the identity politics discourse upon which recent Korean-American narrative is based.
