Abstract

This study aimed to classify university students according to their experiences of student–faculty interaction and to explore the factors influencing these interaction types. It also investigated how students’ learnings experiences contribute to membership in each group and how the identified types differ in learning outcomes and institutional commitment. To achieve these goals, latent profile analysis was conducted using six student–faculty interaction items from the 2022 NASEL survey. The analysis identified four distinct profiles: Isolated(52.9%), Moderate(24.2%), Functional(11.9%), and Holistic(11.0%). Profile membership varied significantly by gender, year in college, and academic major. Furthermore, students with higher levels of learning experience—including class participation, collaborative learning, and active learning—were more likely to belong to the holistic profile. Comparisons across profiles revealed that students in the holistic interaction type demonstrated significantly greater learning outcomes and institutional commitment. These findings highlight the necessity of understanding student–faculty interaction from a multidimensional perspective that accounts for students’ individual characteristics and learning contexts. The study further suggests that universities should establish tailored strategies for supporting student–faculty interaction that reflect the diverse characteristics of student groups.
