Abstract
· Research topics: This study aims to identify latent groups of college freshmen based on their interaction experiences with faculty and peers, and to explore the characteristics of each group along with the predictors influencing group membership. · Research background: Interactions with faculty and peers are core factors in student engagement and play a critical role in freshmen’s adaptation to college life and academic persistence. Accordingly, this study focuses on understanding these experiences. · Differences from prior research: While previous studies have examined factors influencing freshmen’s college adjustment and overall experiences, interactions with faculty and peers have typically been explored in a fragmented manner. This study takes a more comprehensive view, recognizing that such interactions occur in diverse contexts and that each freshman may have unique patterns of engagement. By analyzing various interaction types among freshmen at four-year universities in Korea, this study offers a multifaceted perspective that sets it apart from prior research. · Research method: Using latent profile analysis(LPA), the study identified distinct groups based on freshmen's interaction patterns with faculty and peers. Logistic regression analysis was then employed to explore predictors that influence group classification. · Research results: Four latent groups were identified. Gender, university location, and university size were found to significantly influence group membership. · Contribution points and expected effects: The findings contribute to a better understanding of the interaction patterns of freshmen with faculty and peers, which is crucial for supporting their successful transition into college life. Furthermore, the results provide foundational data for developing more targeted and effective intervention strategies.
